the male Przewalski's horse was asleep for the most exciting part of his road trip

the male Przewalski's horse was asleep for the most exciting part of his road trip

The 23 year old male Przewalski’s horse took a road trip recently to Purdue University’s Large Animal Hospital. He was having some medical problems that needed different equipment than could be provided on grounds. It took a lot of preparation to transport an animal that hadn’t seen the inside of a trailer since he arrived at Mesker Park Zoo in 2005. The trailer was brought up next to the barn and the horses were given a few days to acclimate to it. Then the door between the barn and trailer was left open and tasty alfalfa hay was placed inside. The morning of the trip, staff arrived at 3am and were able to quietly load the male inside and start the four hour drive. Once at Purdue, the male was anesthetized in the trailer and then examined by a top team of vets. He was loaded back into the trailer and the anesthetic was reversed. He is now safely back in Evansville on exhibit with his favorite female.

A Grant’s zebra foal was born early this morning, August 20th. The foal is up and walking, closely following its mother. The foal’s mother is 25 years old and has had over 10 babies. She is a wonderful, attentive mother. The pair and the stallion are currently being held in the lower giraffe yard as we continue to work on the introduction of our newest mare, Lucy. The baby will receive a vet check in the next few days where sex will be confirmed, a weight taken, and vaccinations given.

She weighs around 150 pounds, about a tenth of her adult weight. She still only has one hump standing, but now that she’s eating a lot more grain the other hump should stand up soon.
